Creating Safer Communities Through Stories
Deep Water Publishing is a dedicated social enterprise committed to creating safer communities through the power of storytelling. We create books on water safety for children, helping them learn how to be safe around water and what to do if they need help.
The Deep Water Purpose
Deep Water Publishing strives to foster safer communities through engaging children's books that teach essential water safety for children. We are dedicated to being an integral part of the drowning prevention solution, helping to turn the tide on drowning one story at a time. By empowering children, parents, and educators with vital knowledge and tools, we aim to prevent injuries and save lives, making water safety for children a priority for generations to come.
Our Story
In 2012, our founder, Louise, and her family joined a Beach to Bush tour for Surf Life Saving NSW. The goal was to bring beach safety education to children living away from the coast, ensuring they knew how to stay safe during holidays and what to do if they needed help in the water.
Inspired by the idea of children learning safety tips from lifesavers, Louise wrote a poignant story about a child dragged into deep water by a wave that surged onto the beach. In her story, the child remembers to stay calm and signal for help. At this stage, Louise did not realise the importance of her story and the impact it would have!
A Catalyst for Change
In 2014, Louise's surf club responded to the drowning of a 5-year-old boy who had wandered to the water's edge unsupervised. Louise wondered if her story could have made a difference. Driven by this thought, she embarked on the journey to publish her first book, "Annie and the Waves."
The support from her surf club and community was invaluable. They provided advice, support, and helped raise funds to illustrate the book. Following the success of "Annie and the Waves," Louise has continued to write books on water, river and fishing safety.
Passion for Prevention
Louise combines 17 years of experience as a surf lifesaver with 10 years in early childhood education and six years as a research coordinator. Her unique blend of water safety expertise, love for children's literature, and dedication to drowning prevention has resulted in a series of impactful books teaching water safety for children.
Her books are endorsed by leading drowning prevention organisations such as Surf Life Saving Australia and Royal Life Saving Society Australia, ensuring reliable and trustworthy water safety information.
A Life-Saving Impact
Louise conducted a pilot research project that demonstrated "Annie and the Waves" significantly increases children's beach safety knowledge. Recognised for her innovative water safety programs, Louise has received awards at club, branch, and state levels, and has presented her work at international conferences. Her extensive knowledge and industry connections have made her a key figure in drowning prevention education.
